2026 MLB Draft Lottery Results: Chicago White Sox Get First Pick
"The Chicago White Sox were awarded the No. 1 overall pick during the 2026 MLB Draft Lottery on Tuesday at the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida. The White Sox finished the 2025 regular season with a 60-102 record and as a result had the highest odds to receive the first pick in the 2026 Draft at 27.73%. That came one year after they set an MLB record for most losses in a single season in the Modern Era (since 1901)."
"That was due to the new rules in the Draft Lottery Era that began in 2023. One of which states that payor clubs - a team that gives rather than just receives money from revenue sharing - cannot have lottery picks in consecutive years. This will be the White Sox's third No. 1 overall pick in franchise history, with the other two coming in 1971 and 1977."
"They drafted Danny Goodwin straight out of high school in 1971, but he did not end up playing for the organization. He was the first No. 1 overall pick in MLB history to not sign with the team that drafted him, choosing instead to accept a scholarship from Southern University. Goodwin was later selected with the first overall pick in the 1975 MLB Draft, this time by the California Angels."
The Chicago White Sox secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft Lottery after a 60-102 2025 season, carrying the highest odds at 27.73%. The team had set an MLB Modern Era record for losses in 2024 but only received the No. 10 pick in 2025 because Draft Lottery Era rules prevent payor clubs from receiving lottery picks in consecutive years. The 2026 selection marks the franchise's third No. 1 overall pick, following 1971 and 1977. Danny Goodwin did not sign after the 1971 pick and was later taken first again in 1975, while Harold Baines became a Hall of Famer for Chicago. The Royals and Giants moved significantly up the draft order, and several clubs including the Cardinals, Orioles, Marlins, Diamondbacks and Rangers fell five spots.
