"One day, in the distant future, you may find yourself in a really boring work meeting that could've been a text message on your wrist terminal (yes, we're moving to wearable tech, we are never getting rid of work meetings) and you'll pull up Sporcle, even more enshittified than it is now, and try to recall the entire set of players that constituted the star-crossed-but-also-just-very-meh 2025 Atlanta Braves."
"He threw around 12 professional innings the season he converted, and his Rule 5 clock was twanging, so A.J. Preller did what he's known to do and... added Ruiz to the 40-man roster to prevent a guy with exactly one inning pitched above Low-A from getting sniped. In the end, this was kind of pointless. Ruiz struggled as a pitcher in High-A in 2017 (and made his major league debut anyway, good ol' Preller never disappoints), but then got squeezed off the 40-man roster"
Jose Ruiz signed with the Padres out of Venezuela in 2011 as a catcher and later converted to pitching after failing to hit. He threw roughly 12 professional innings in his conversion season and was added to the 40-man roster to avoid Rule 5 exposure. Ruiz struggled in High-A in 2017 but still reached the majors, then lost his spot and was claimed by the White Sox. He served as a yo-yo relief arm with one decent 2021 season, followed by a sub-replacement 2022 and a rough start to 2023. The Braves claimed him off waivers from the Phillies in early June 2025, marking his fifth MLB organization.
