Matthew Boyd had knee surgery about three weeks earlier to remove a small meniscus piece after an injury playing with his kids. The timeline is sufficient for him to return to pitching activities, including bullpens and a rehab start. After a successful live batting practice, he is scheduled to start for the Iowa Cubs on Sunday. If that start goes well, he is expected to make one more appearance for Iowa before returning to the Chicago Cubs. His return could align with the Cubs’ West Coast road trip beginning in Colorado on June 9. During his absence, the Cubs must also manage without Edward Cabrera, who remains on the injured list until at least June 5, and they have limited off-days before June 8.
"It's been about three weeks since Matthew Boyd had surgery to hack off a little piece of the meniscus in his knee after an injury playing with his kids. That many not seem like a long time, but for that particular procedure, it's enough time for Boyd to have gotten back up on the mound, thrown bullpens, and readied himself for a rehab start."
"After a successful round of live batting practice yesterday, Matthew Boyd is scheduled to start for the Iowa Cubs on Sunday, per Craig Counsell. If that goes well, he's expected to get one more go at Iowa before returning to the big league team. That could have him back with the Cubs in time for their West Coast road trip that begins in Colorado on June 9."
"In the meantime, the Cubs will have to figure out how to keep on getting by without Boyd and without Edward Cabrera, whose minimum stay on the IL (blister) will keep him out until at least June 5. The Cubs have only one off-day before June 8, so it's not like they can totally maneuver around guys - even if Jordan Wicks isn't going to get another start after last night, the Cubs will probably need to call upon Javier Assad."
