Safety Jonathan Owens Leaves Bears For 1-Year Deal with Colts
Jonathan Owels is signing a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts after spending two seasons with the Chicago Bears. Owels was a valuable contributor on special teams, appearing on over 55 percent of snaps in that phase each season, and logged 429 defensive snaps during the injury-plagued 2024 secondary. While not a superstar, he provided useful depth and is remembered for scoring the first touchdown of the 2024 season following a blocked punt. His departure marks the fifth defensive back from the 2025 Bears roster to leave for other NFL teams. The Bears addressed these departures by signing safety Coby Bryant, a recent Super Bowl winner with Seattle, and defensive back Cameron Lewis.
"After spending the last two seasons with the Chicago Bears, Jonathan Owels is signing with the Indianapolis Colts. Owels was a core member of Chicago's special teams, appearing on more than 55 percent of that phase's snaps in each of his two seasons with the team. And during a 2024 season in which injuries were an issue in the secondary, Owels picked up 429 defensive snaps."
"Owels wasn't a superstar, but he was a useful piece of the puzzle. I will always fondly remember Jonathan Owels scoring the first touchdown of the 2024 season after a blocked punt. The Bears don't win that game without his gold-medal effort."
