Robot Overlords Will Scrutinize Balls and Strikes Soon
"Seems that we are getting ourselves some automated balls and strikes soon. I unfortunately can't read past the paywall and I'm not subscribing to that particular rag, but if this goes through, there might be more consistency to what we know as the strike zone as early as next season. They already tried ABS in the All-Star Game and that was pretty cool, and for the most part umpires do know the zone but they're only human."
"If the technology is good enough, which it seems is the consensus, it makes sense to do it, even if it's just a challenge system that still motivates everyone in the plate appearance to know their zone before issuing a challenge. I suppose there will be some objections from traditionalists, but I believe this will improve the game far more than it can piss people off."
Automated balls-and-strikes (ABS) are likely to be implemented soon, potentially bringing more consistent strike-zone calls as early as next season. The All-Star Game trial showed promising results and suggested general consensus that the technology can perform adequately. Current umpires generally know the zone but make human errors. A challenge-based ABS implementation could preserve player and umpire engagement while improving accuracy and encouraging participants to understand the strike zone before challenging calls. Some traditionalists are expected to object. Overall, adopting ABS is predicted to improve game consistency and fairness more than it will alienate fans.
