Shota Imanaga and Rhett Lowder started the final game of a four-game series between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. Michael Conforto hit a right-field home run off Lowder to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead, after making the 26-man roster out of spring training. Lowder’s control deteriorated in the fourth inning, including two walks to open the frame, followed by additional walks and only one strike in ten pitches before being removed. Chicago scored multiple runs on bases-loaded walks, a Tyler Stephenson home-plate fielding error, RBI hits, and further miscues, reaching 7-0. Imanaga struck out batters consistently and used his splitter effectively, including escaping a fifth-inning bases-loaded jam by striking out two batters.
