"The big trade we expected to see before the NHL's pre-Olympic trade freeze actually happened. The New York Rangers traded star forward Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings. The Rangers retained half of Panarin's cap hit. Following the trade, Panarin agreed to a two-year extension with the Kings that has an $11M cap hit. "Multiple insiders have reported the Kings were the only team to whom Panarin wanted to be traded. In return, the Rangers will receive forward prospect Liam Greentree and two draft picks. As Mollie Walker of the New York Post outlined on Twitter, the picks are "a conditional [2026] 3rd that can become a second if the Kings win 1 playoff round (would be better of two Kings 3rds) and a conditional fourth-rounder in 2028 if the Kings win 2 playoff rounds.""
Artemi Panarin was traded from the New York Rangers to the Los Angeles Kings, with the Rangers retaining half of his salary cap hit. Panarin signed a two-year extension with an $11 million cap hit. The Kings were reported as Panarin’s only preferred trade destination. The Rangers received 20-year-old forward prospect Liam Greentree plus a conditional 2026 third-round pick that upgrades to a second if the Kings win one playoff round, and a conditional 2028 fourth-round pick if the Kings win two playoff rounds. Greentree was the 24th overall pick in 2024 and plays in the OHL.
