Kyle Wright and Vince Velasquez Additions Officially Official, Coming to Big League Camp - Bleacher Nation
"Two of the Chicago Cubs minor league additions are now official, and are both coming to big league Spring Training via the non-roster invite. We previously discussed the reported Kyle Wright and Vince Velasquez signings, both notable for being starting pitcher depth in addition to being reclamation plays. For that reason, it was expected that they would eventually be in big league Spring Training, and sure enough:"
"Cubs made Kyle Wright's NRI deal official. They also announced that RHP Vince Velasquez, who signed a minor-league deal earlier this month, was invited to major-league camp. Obviously the Cubs have a tremendous volume of 40-man starting pitcher depth already, with all of Colin Rea, Ben Brown, Javier Assad, and Jordan Wicks technically outside the starting rotation. But injuries happen, surprising resurgences from previously-successful pitchers happen, and bullpen conversions happen. Good to get a couple extra, experienced arms into camp who are capable of throwing a starter's innings."
Kyle Wright and Vince Velasquez signed minor-league deals with the Chicago Cubs and received non-roster invitations to major-league Spring Training. Both pitchers are intended as starting pitcher depth and represent reclamation opportunities. The Cubs already maintain significant 40-man starting pitching depth, including Colin Rea, Ben Brown, Javier Assad, and Jordan Wicks, all currently outside the Opening Day rotation. Injuries, unexpected resurgences, and bullpen conversions create demand for experienced arms. Adding Wright and Velasquez brings extra veteran starters capable of handling starter-type workloads and increases organizational flexibility during Spring Training and into the regular season.
