Javier Assad will play for Team Mexico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, repeating his 2023 national-team role. In the 2023 WBC Assad threw 5.2 scoreless innings, recorded six strikeouts and allowed one walk. Assad's 2025 season was limited to 37.0 innings because of an oblique injury, and he spent most of the year on the 60-day injured list. When healthy, Assad offers the Chicago Cubs pitching versatility, able to work out of the bullpen or slide into the rotation. Assad is the seventh Cub confirmed for the 2026 WBC, joining Pete Crow‑Armstrong, Matthew Boyd, Jameson Taillon, Alex Bregman, Daniel Palencia, and Seiya Suzuki.
