An 8th-inning relief failure gave the White Sox a 7-4 lead after Tristan Peters hit a go-ahead three-run home run. In the 9th inning, Michael Conforto answered with a game-tying three-run homer off Seranthony Dominguez, sending the game to extra innings. The Cubs scored one run in the top of the 10th to take an 8-7 lead, but Ryan Rolison allowed a walk-off two-run home run by Edgar Quero. The late pitching issues included Phil Maton’s lack of velocity and a sweeper home run, while Colin Rea struggled early and Erick Fedde’s early damage did not hold. Michael Conforto was named player of the game for his 2-for-4 performance.
"A disastrous 8th inning of relief from Phil Maton, including a go-ahead three-run home run from White Sox outfielder Tristan Peters, gave the White Sox a 7-4 lead that took the air out of our sails. But then, when all hope seemed lost, Michael Conforto played hero again (unfortunately temporarily), launching a game-tying three-run home run of his own off Sox reliever Seranthony Dominguez in the top of the 9th inning to send the game to extras."
"A chaotic, but not well executed, top of the 10th saw the Cubs push one run across for an 8-7 lead, only for Ryan Rolison to give up a walk-off, two-run home run to Sox catcher Edgar Quero, who launched a middle-middle 95mph fastball to the left-center field bleachers. And that was that. It was fun. Then it sucked. Then it was fun. Then it sucked. And so on until that final pitch."
"Maton's stuff continues to look spinny and lacking velocity. The home run given up to Peters was a cement mixer of a sweeper at 85mph in the heart of the zone. I don't know how he could be trusted any longer to pitch innings that are anything even close to high-leverage... Colin Rea was okay at best, but not okay enough to be frank. He was run after just 4-2/3rds, allowing four earned runs, six hits, striking out four, and walking one."
"The Ankin Law: "Making it Personal" Player of the Game is Michael Conforto, who finished the game 2-for-4 with the heroic game-tying three-run home run. Credit to Craig Counsell for leaning into the hot hand. It's a shame the Cubs' bullpen couldn't finish this one off. Meanwhile, the Cubs getting to Sox starter Erick Fedde early in the game didn't pay off, as they steadily came back after trailing 3-0 after the 1st inning."
