The Cubs won a baseball game and ended a losing streak. The offense produced hits throughout the batting order, with every spot recording at least one hit and driving in or scoring at least one run. The team left many runners on base, but the volume of baserunners was high, including five hits with runners in scoring position. After an early lead was erased by a three-run homer from Jameson Taillon, the Cubs regained a 4-3 lead. Another setback seemed possible, but Ian Happ hit a three-run homer to swing momentum and add separation. The win brought relief and started a new winning streak.
"Man did we all need that. Each one of us and each one of them. Sure, the Cubs were probably going to win again eventually no matter what, but it has just felt like a big offensive game was needed to really finally win one. Every spot in the batting order had at least one hit. Every spot in the batting order drove in or scored at least one run. The Cubs left a lot of runners on base, but that was mostly because they had so freaking many - they actually got five hits with runners in scoring position tonight!"
"I'll admit, when the Cubs took the early lead only to see Jameson Taillon give up a three-run homer to give it all back, I thought I was looking at the story of the game. Then the Cubs took a 4-3 lead and it happened again. So, yeah, it was gonna be another disappointment. All the more reason Ian Happ's three-run homer was such a moment, and pouring it on a little from there was so huge."
"The Ankin Law: "Making it Personal" Player of the Game is of course Ian Happ, who, even in the midst of a funk overall, still very clearly loves to hit in Pittsburgh."
"Ah. Gonna sleep so much better tonight. Winning streak just started. Full Box Score."
