David Ross - Through Laughs! - Admits He Was Rooting Against the Cubs After He Was Fired - Bleacher Nation
"Oh, no. I was depressed, embarrassed. You go through a bit of self-evaluation. It's all over - everybody knows - and my phone was just blowing up. I put it down for a couple days. I was embarrassed to even go out. I don't know why - I didn't do anything wrong - but it's just embarrassing to get fired and everybody wants to know what happened, or you got screwed, or everybody's got their take. But I'm someone who tries to assess the situation. What a blessing it was to be able to manage the Cubs with no coaching experience. I just had to process exactly how I felt, and that takes time."
"When you get let go on a contract, the great thing is they're still paying you for a bit. So I was like, all right, I'm going to take a step back and take a deep breath. Because when I got done playing, even though I'd been retired since '16, I went straight into Dancing with the Stars, then ESPN, then worked in the Cubs' front office - I was going through a divorce - a lot of chaotic stuff in my life, and then straight from that into managing."
David Ross said he did not want to return to managing right away after being dismissed by the Cubs. He described feeling depressed and embarrassed, with his phone constantly blowing up and people asking what happened or claiming he was “screwed.” He said he needed time for self-evaluation even though he believed he did nothing wrong. He explained that being paid on a contract allowed him to step back, take a deep breath, and process his situation. He also referenced major personal and professional changes around the time he moved into managing, including retirement, television work, ESPN, front-office work, and a divorce.
