Knoxville Smokies also fell behind early versus Montgomery and could not rally in their opener.
"After dropping a series finale on Mother's Day against the Columbus Clippers, they went and got swept in their six-game set with the Nashville Sounds. Unfortunately, last night's opener with the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals) didn't go much better. It was a similar story to what we've seen over this tough stretch. The teams went back and forth for most of the game, only for Iowa to find a way to lose late."
"After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, Kevin Alcántara tied the game up with an RBI single in the third inning. Luke Little walked in a run in the top of the fifth, giving Memphis the lead back. But Iowa had an immediate answer in the form of a James Triantos RBI triple a half-inning later to tie the game again."
"Once we got to the seventh inning, Memphis started to separate itself. The Redbirds picked up a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to take a 4-2 lead. Justin Dean homered in the bottom of the eighth to bring the Cubs within one. But in the ninth, the Redbirds picked up another pair of runs - another walk and a sac fly - to make it a 6-3 lead."
"After a Brett Bateman leadoff walk in the ninth, the Cubs went down in order, and they dropped their eighth straight matchup 6-3. FINAL: Redbirds 6, Cubs 3 | Box Score Double-A Knoxville Smokies The Smokies fell behind early against the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays) and were unable to mount a comeback in their series opener on Tuesday."
