"There was a claim today as the Cubs finally seemed to make some use of their roster space, as Chicago North claimed pitcher Ryan Rolison off waivers from the South Siders. Far be it for me, a weakling, to say he's a soft-tosser, but a lefty chucking low-90s can be quite useful and we will see how the Cubs deploy him if he indeed pans out."
"The bigger news, of course, is that the Cubs are finalizing a trade for Marlins starter Edward Cabrera, who had injury issues as recently as last season, but did end the season throwing the last two starts available to him. When healthy, though, we're talking about high-90s gas and a changeup (!) that comes at batters in the mid-90s. I'm unsure at this point that the Cubs throw money at the remaining free agent starters (particularly the guys attached to a qualifying offer),"
Chicago claimed left-handed pitcher Ryan Rolison off waivers, adding a low-90s arm who could provide useful depth if he develops. The Cubs are finalizing a trade for Marlins starter Edward Cabrera, who dealt with recent injuries but finished the season with two starts. Cabrera offers high-90s velocity and a mid-90s changeup and carries club control for three more seasons through 2026. His arbitration-suppressed salary would preserve payroll flexibility. That flexibility could be used to pursue impact bats such as Alex Bregman, Bo Bichette, Kyle Tucker, or Cody Bellinger.
