"My first live BP, the first time facing hitters, I was a little juiced up. The second time I faced them, velo dropped back down. I felt like I was kind of working on stuff more. It's just kind of finding that happy medium to where you set a good foundation, but you're not overdoing it too early. I feel like I did a good job of that [against Colorado]."
"Cade Horton was dominant in the 2nd half last year- a 1.03 ERA and finishing with a 2.67 ERA overall (118 innings). Cade dominated in part because of a new changeup. He used it primarily against lefties. Another out pitch."
Cade Horton pitched two innings in his spring training debut, throwing 26 pitches with typical velocity and solid results. He threw 96 mph in the game after showing 97+ in his first live batting practice session, which is normal as adrenaline affects velocity. Horton noted he was more amped up during his first live BP and intentionally dialed back intensity in his second appearance to work on mechanics and build a proper foundation. He felt less rust than expected and executed pitches well. His improved changeup, developed last season, proved effective against lefties and could be a key separator this season. Last year he posted a 1.03 ERA in the second half and finished with a 2.67 overall ERA across 118 innings.
