"I always felt that I was a Cub in the Hall of Fame. I just had the 'M' on the cap. That's what I always related to. That's where my heart was, even though I was six years a Cub. It means everything. It means I finally had the opportunity to provide my input."
"It was just a love affair with the fans in right field. Andre's Army. That's what is most enjoyable about the game. That's what you play the game for - for the fans. And the way they embraced me, it goes beyond what my wildest expectations would've been."
"They knew my preference all along was the (Cubs') 'C,' and if that wasn't manifested, then just give me a blank cap, such as the protocol is now with (Hall of Famers). It's been resolved, and I can move forward."
Andre Dawson, who played 11 seasons with the Montreal Expos and 6 with the Chicago Cubs, was inducted into the Hall of Fame with an Expos cap despite preferring a Cubs cap. The Hall of Fame later implemented a policy allowing players to wear blank caps on their plaques. After conversations in 2023, Dawson pursued changing his plaque retroactively. His request has now been approved, and he will wear a blank cap instead. Dawson expressed that his heart always belonged with the Cubs and their fans, and this resolution allows him to move forward with satisfaction.
