NFL Salary Cap Is Taking Another Huge Leap in 2026
"When Patrick wrote his quick look at the Chicago Bears salary cap situation, OverTheCap's projections had the 2026 NFL salary cap pegged at $295.5 million. That the projected range for the 2026 range starts at $301.2 million is significant news on its own. It would be helpful for the Bears if the league settles on a $301.2 million number for 2026. But if that number can stretch to $305.7 million, I think folks would be doing cartwheels at Halas Hall."
"To be clear, the Bears still have a lot of work to do in order to get under whatever the projected 2026 NFL salary cap ends up being in March. But getting somewhere between an extra $5.7 million to $10.2 million would help chip away at the work that the number crunchers at Halas Hall will have to do to get this team cap compliant. Every little bit helps, after all."
The NFL projects the 2026 salary cap between $301.2 million and $305.7 million per club. That range marks a continued increase from this year's $279.2 million cap and a roughly $97.5 million rise from the $208.2 million cap in 2022. The projected nine-year jump totals about $134.2 million. OverTheCap had previously estimated $295.5 million for 2026, so the higher projection provides additional flexibility. The Chicago Bears will need to reduce commitments to get under the 2026 cap, and an extra $5.7 million to $10.2 million would ease roster compliance work and help address remaining cap shortfalls.
