A two-month-old black bear cub, found alone in a California forest, was rescued by campers and is recovering at the San Diego Humane Society's Ramona Wildlife Center. Initially found starving, weighing only 3lbs, the cub has since quadrupled in size, reaching over 12lbs after receiving consistent care. The organization emphasizes keeping the cub wild and minimizing human interaction to prevent future conflicts once he is released back into the wild. Enrichment sessions mimic maternal behavior to ensure his adjustment and survival in a natural habitat.
The more we can keep this cub wild and keep him from recognizing humans as the providers of anything good, we're hoping he sees us as other bears.
Autumn Welch, wildlife operations manager, stated that the cub, initially weighing just 3lbs, has quadrupled in size to over 12lbs, indicating his recovery.
