US appeal court upholds $2.5m sanctions ruling in favour of Peter Doig
"The US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upheld a sanctions ruling of $2.5m in favor of artist Peter Doig against claims he painted a disputed work."
"Fletcher bought a painting from a Canadian inmate, claiming Doig created it, but Doig proved he wasn’t in Canada when the painting was made."
The US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upheld a $2.5 million sanctions ruling favoring artist Peter Doig after a lawsuit accused him of creating a disavowed painting. The case involved a painting purchased in the 1970s which Fletcher claimed was made by Doig. Doig demonstrated he could not have painted the work as he was a teenager in Toronto at the time. The court ruled in Doig's favor, stating that Fletcher's claims were baseless and awarded sanctions against Fletcher and others involved in the suit.
