"President Donald Trump has had Chicago in his crosshairs for a long time, but his weaponization of the federal government against the city during the past month has felt like a full-on assault. On September 8th, the Department of Homeland Security announced the launch of Operation Midway Blitz, which it said would target "criminal illegal aliens" for arrest and deportation."
"Arrests are taking place all over the Chicago area, but some of the biggest flash points have occurred on the South and West Sides, which are home to many of the city's largest Black and Latino communities. Conflict has occurred in homes, migrant shelters, city streets, courtrooms, a detention center, and even the areas around churches, schools, and hospitals. Videos have captured federal agents chasing a delivery worker, arresting rideshare drivers outside O'Hare Airport, and pinning people to the ground."
"Videos have captured federal agents chasing a delivery worker, arresting rideshare drivers outside O'Hare Airport, and pinning people to the ground. One undocumented man was fatally shot by ICE agents, after agents stopped his car and he attempted to drive past them. (D.H.S. officials said that one of the officers was "seriously injured" by the car, though video footage raises doubts about that.) Local and state elected officials have held press conferences denouncing ICE"
On September 8th, the Department of Homeland Security launched Operation Midway Blitz to target "criminal illegal aliens" for arrest and deportation. Since the operation began, DHS estimates more than fifteen hundred people have been arrested in the area covered by ICE's Chicago field office, which spans five additional states. The National Guard was deployed to the Chicago area, although a federal judge temporarily blocked that deployment. Federal arrests have occurred across the South and West Sides, in homes, shelters, streets, courtrooms, detention centers, and near schools, churches, and hospitals. Videos show agents chasing and pinning people, and one undocumented man was fatally shot during an encounter with ICE.
