How the Chicago White Sox navigate pitching 17 games in 17 days: 'Trying to make sure guys are rested'
Briefly

The White Sox began a 17-games-in-17-days stretch, reaching day five against the Royals. Pitching management prioritizes rest, starter innings of five to six, and close monitoring of workload and daily physical feedback. Shane Smith delivered a career-high seven-inning, one-hit performance in an 80-pitch outing, combining with Tyler Gilbert to limit Kansas City to two hits in a 7-0 victory. Smith is at 114 innings for the season and has had a brief injured-list stint. Starters Jonathan Cannon and Sean Burke were optioned to Triple-A; Cannon produced a solid 6 1/3-inning outing in Norfolk. No blanket restrictions exist; focus remains on individual readiness.
"They've been really good with my innings and my pitch counts since the start of the year," Smith said after the 80-pitch outing. "Making sure you're doing everything behind the scenes in the weight room and training room and all that stuff. Making sure you're ready every five, six days, whatever it is."
"Shane had the little time on the (injured list), so he's in a good spot from an innings standpoint," Katz said. "Davis (Martin) had his time (on the injured list), too. (Aaron) Civale's a veteran. (Yoendrys) Gf3mez is just getting back to it. We feel good where everybody's at. There's no real restrictions. It's more about how they feel and monitoring it that way."
