Aaron Civale was claimed by the Cubs from the White Sox for the waiver price. Tom Cosgrove was designated for assignment to open a 40-man roster spot after allowing one run in four innings over two relief appearances earlier this year. Civale began the season with the Brewers, was demoted to the bullpen after a 4.91 ERA in five starts, and was traded to the White Sox for Andrew Vaughn. Civale posted a 3.56 ERA in his first nine starts for Chicago but has struggled recently. The Cubs likely plan to use him as a long reliever, and additional roster moves remain to accommodate Kevin Alcántara and reported acquisition Carlos Santana.
There were some rumors that the Cubs were interested in trading for Aaron Civale from the White Sox at the trade deadline. That didn't happen, but now the Cubs have acquired Civale from the Sox for the waiver price. To make room for Civale on the 40-man roster, left-hander Tom Cosgrove was designated for assignment. Cosgrove allowed one run in four innings over two relief appearances for the Cubs earlier this year.
Civale started this year with the Brewers and was demoted to the bullpen after pitching poorly as a starter: 4.91 ERA over five starts. He asked to be traded and the Brewers accommodated him by trading him to the White Sox - for Andrew Vaughn. That worked out pretty well for Milwaukee. Civale posted a 3.56 ERA in his first nine starts for the Sox through Aug. 2 (including five shutout innings against the Cubs July 26),
