Tesla's European rivals have a secret weapon: hybrids
Hybrid electric vehicle sales surged in Europe and the US in the first half of the year, boosting automakers that offer multi-powertrain models. Plug-in hybrid sales in Europe rose 52% in July year-over-year, according to ACEA. In the US, hybrid sales rose nearly 20% year-over-year in July while battery-electric and plug-in hybrid sales remained flat, per Argonne National Laboratory. Tesla, which sells only pure battery EVs, experienced a 40% decline in European sales in July. Chinese automaker BYD outsold Tesla in Europe as its sales jumped nearly 300%. The EU’s 17% tariff targets imported battery EVs but not hybrids, and BYD prioritized hybrids such as the Seal U.
