Tesla Full Self-Driving pricing strategy eliminates one recurring complaint
"In the past, if a Tesla owner purchased the Full Self-Driving suite outright, the company did not allow them to transfer the purchase to a new vehicle, essentially requiring them to buy it all over again, which could obviously get pretty pricey. This was until Q3 2023, when Tesla allowed a one-time amnesty to transfer Full Self-Driving to a new vehicle, and then again last year."
"Last night, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on X that the Full Self-Driving suite would only be available in a subscription platform, which is the other purchase option it currently offers for FSD use, priced at just $99 per month. Tesla is shifting FSD to a subscription-only model, confirms Elon Musk Having it available in a subscription-only platform boasts several advantages, including the potential for a tiered system that would potentially offer less expensive options,"
In the past, Tesla required buyers who purchased Full Self-Driving outright to repurchase the suite for a new vehicle because purchases were non-transferable. Tesla offered one-time amnesties in Q3 2023 and again last year, and a transfer window opened ahead of a February 14 deadline. The amnesty enabled owners with Hardware 3 to upgrade to AI4 without repeatedly paying the roughly $8,000 purchase price. Elon Musk announced that Full Self-Driving will move to a subscription-only model priced at about $99 per month. Subscription access can eliminate transfer disputes and could enable tiered pricing, pay-per-mile billing, or bundled benefits.
