San Francisco will get to try another robotaxi service: Amazon's Zoox
"Amazon-backed Zoox makes and operates toaster-shaped robotaxis with no steering wheel and pedals. The company has been testing its autonomous vehicle since 2017. Some members of the public will be able to try a Zoox for free in select SF neighborhoods. San Francisco will get to try another robotaxi service - although this one's a little different. Starting Tuesday, Amazon's Zoox is allowing some members of the public to try its toaster-shaped driverless carsas part of its early rider program."
""Since launching our service in Las Vegas in September, we've had thousands of people from around the world experience their first rides in the robotaxi, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive," the spokesperson told Business Insider. "Riders are enjoying the group experience and have consistently called out their preference to ride in the Zoox robotaxi over a traditional car.""
Zoox operates purpose-built, toaster-shaped robotaxis without steering wheels or pedals and has tested its autonomous vehicle since 2017. The company is inviting selected San Francisco residents to join an early rider program that offers free rides. Users on the Zoox app will be removed from the waitlist based on criteria such as location and invited to provide feedback. The initial San Francisco service area includes South of Market, Mission, and Design District neighborhoods. Zoox currently operates about 50 robotaxis across Las Vegas and San Francisco and plans to accept more riders as it expands its fleet. The company previously launched a free-ride service on the Las Vegas Strip.
