I Drove Tesla's Budget Model Y Standard. It's Not Worth It.
A prospective buyer noticed a brand-new Tesla Model Y Standard while returning a Premium-trimmed Model Y and visited a Tesla store the day before Thanksgiving. A salesperson quickly offered a test drive, and about 45 minutes were spent evaluating the vehicle. The Model Y Standard features simpler exterior styling compared with the Premium: no full-width front or rear light bars, differently shaped bumpers and trunk lid, balloon-style tires, and basic hubcaps. The Standard trim presents a visibly downmarket appearance and is positioned as a lower-cost alternative intended to boost sales.
"I happened to be en route to return the Premium-trimmed Tesla Model Y I had been testing for our Breakthrough EV of the Year awards when my eagle-eyed self spotted it: a person driving a brand-new Model Y Standard. I didn't realize the new budget-oriented version of Tesla's most popular car was on sale yet, which made me curious to look at one in person."
"The Standard Model Y and the more upmarket Premium trim look very similar to one another, but there are more than a few exterior changes that set the cheaper model apart from its higher-dollar sibling. Up front, there's no full-width light bar, and the bumper cover itself is actually shaped a lot differently. Same with the rear; the Cybertruck-inspired full-width light bar found on the Premium car is gone, and the bumper and trunk lid are simpler than its more expensive cousin's."
