A lorry driver crashed into a Boeing 787-9 at Heathrow Airport after likely confusing the accelerator for the brakes during a safety protocol maneuver. The incident halted operations at Terminal 4, causing delays for passengers from a recent flight from Saudi Arabia. While the damage appeared minimal, it pierced the aircraft's fuselage. Emergency services were called, and an investigation followed as the driver, employed by contractor ABM, was left in shock over the unusual occurrence, noted by experienced baggage handlers.
The driver must have probably been trying to perform a safety protocol manoeuvre where, when approaching the aircraft, they hit the brakes on multiple occasions.
Although the damage doesn't look that big, the fuselage had been pierced.
Everyone was shocked because all the work had to be stopped—it's just so stupid and ridiculous, it's almost laughable.
It's very rare that it happens—some of us have more than 15 years' experience of baggage handling and between us we've never seen anything like it.
