"Last year, it felt like the sky was falling for most automakers that have a presence in China. The market is huge, but there's clearly not enough space for all players. This overcrowding is seemingly hitting Western automakers the hardest. Global plans to electrify, using tech made outside of China, can't keep up with the blinding speed and technically impressive models coming from the country's homegrown brands."
"General Motors has remained relatively nimble in the face of adversity. For Buick, one of its most important brands in China, it has canceled or refined slow-selling electric cars based on the Ultium platform and pivoted to a new platform called Xiao Yao. Its next model on that chassis has been leaked by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and it looks like it's poised to do battle right in the heart of China's premium midsized crossover market."
Buick Electra E7 is the third model to use the China-developed Xiao Yao platform, which accommodates EV, EREV, and PHEV architectures. The Electra E7 closely matches the size of the Chevrolet Blazer EV and appears to be a production version of the Electra SUV concept. China’s crowded EV market has pressured many Western brands, prompting GM to cancel or revise slow-selling Ultium-based models and shift Buick to the Xiao Yao platform. The Electra E7 was revealed through MIIT homologation images showing styling, dimensions and power figures; pricing, range and battery details remain undisclosed.
