"Now, we know that something similar will happen at the Kentucky plant-Ford says it's spending $2 billion to convert the factory to make prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. Those aren't destined for EVs, but they are the preferred cell format for data centers, Ford says. The company says that it will bring the factory online in the next 18 months, reaching an annual output of 20 GWh."
"Other Ford plants are also being repurposed. With no full-size BEV pickup in the product plans, the assembly plant in Tennessee that was to produce it-the one near the battery factory that SK On is keeping-will instead build new gas-powered trucks, although not for another four years. Around that same time, its Ohio assembly plant will begin building new commercial vehicles."
Ford is spending $2 billion to convert its Kentucky plant to produce prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The LFP cells will target data center energy storage rather than electric vehicles. The converted factory is scheduled to come online within 18 months and to reach an annual output of 20 GWh. The Tennessee assembly plant that had been slated for a full-size BEV pickup will instead build new gas-powered trucks in about four years. The Ohio assembly plant will begin producing new commercial vehicles around the same time. The restructuring will cost about $19.5 billion over several years, including $5.5 billion in cash, mostly in late 2025 and extending through 2027.
