Elon Musk recently dismissed the idea of Tesla acquiring Uber, emphasizing Tesla's plans to implement their own autonomous ride-hailing service. In a forthcoming model, Tesla owners will be permitted to lend their vehicles to Tesla's autonomous fleet, allowing them to earn income similar to renting property on Airbnb. With an upcoming robotaxi service debuting in Austin, Musk envisions a scalable fleet expansion, starting with 10 vehicles and potentially reaching 1,000 within months. Tesla's technology, including their Full Self-Driving software, is poised to support this venture without a driver present, marking a significant shift in the ride-hailing landscape.
We have millions of cars that will be able to operate autonomously, a combination of a Tesla-owned fleet and also enabling Tesla owners to be able to add or subtract their car to the fleet.
Musk's proposed business model would allow Tesla drivers to rent out their cars for autonomous ride-hailing, just like one can rent out a spare bedroom through Airbnb.
Weâll start with probably 10 for a week, then increase it to 20, 30, 40; it will probably be at 1,000 within a few months.
Thereâs no need for Tesla to buy the ubiquitous rideshare app Uber, as we envision a world where one can call an autonomous Tesla.
