What job seekers and employers need to learn about AI and hiring, according to Indeed's top marketer
"That paradox is a focus for James Whitemore, who joined Indeed as chief marketing officer in June 2025, the same month former CEO Hisayuki "Deko" Idekoba returned to lead the company once again. Whitemore told Business Insider that both companies and candidates have to reorient how they share information, add more details and nuance to postings and profiles, and move towards natural language to optimize for AI."
"James Whitemore: We're trying to shift the whole conversation from job search to one that is more proactive, where a potential employer is sourcing and screening for the right candidates, rather than the candidates having to go find the job. So first, when you are looking for candidates, how do companies build their profiles? A lot of large-scale employers have really complex search strings that they use to source candidates."
Job openings declined in 2025 while employers continued struggling to find appropriate skill matches. James Whitemore became Indeed's chief marketing officer in June 2025 and Hisayuki "Deko" Idekoba returned as CEO the same month. Employers and candidates must reorient how they share information, add more details to postings and profiles, and use natural language to optimize for AI. Indeed launched Career Scout and Talent Scout in September and plans an Indeed Connect API integration for employers in January 2026. Indeed's marketing team uses AI to maximize first-party data and runs synthetic audience testing. Hiring is shifting toward proactive sourcing and real-language candidate descriptions instead of complex search strings.
