"The Ukrainians were absolutely stunned,"
"well, of course you put nets over your positions because that's how you defend yourself."
"We went 'round every fishing port in the east of England asking for their old fishing nets,"
"and we've now got hundreds and hundreds of meters of fishing nets, which we drape over positions when we conduct training."
The British Army had not widely used anti-drone nets prior to exposure to Ukrainian practice. Ukrainian forces routinely cover positions, roads, vehicles, and weapon systems with netting to snag drone propellers and prevent strikes. Drones have become ubiquitous and are behind most battlefield strikes, driving widespread adoption of low-cost countermeasures. Nets are stretched over fortified positions, weapon systems, and armored vehicles, with key supply routes also covered. Ukrainian units have sourced netting from fishing villages and other available supplies. The UK collected fishing nets domestically and now drapes netting over training positions.
