Battle-tested Ukrainian weapons are about to hit the global arms market for the first time
"In a shift, Ukraine has been making plans for how it could export to partner nations, which would allow companies to scale up production beyond the limitations of Ukraine's defense budget. Key to this project, Ukrainian leadership has said, will be ensuring Ukraine's defense is unaffected, that Russia doesn't acquire Ukrainian tech, and that exports go only to countries that have supported it against Russia."
"On Tuesday, Zelenskyy did not elaborate on what kind of weapons Ukraine would export, but he has previously pointed to some kinds of drones as an area where Ukraine has a surplus ready to export. They were also identified this month by Brave1, a Ukrainian government-backed body aimed at accelerating military technology, as systems that were ready to be sold abroad. It identified ground drones, drone software, and naval drones as products made by Ukraine that are export options."
Ukraine will begin controlled exports of domestically manufactured, battle-tested weaponry in November, after freezing exports at the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. Wartime necessity spurred massive growth in Ukraine's defense industry, producing drones, artillery, missiles and other equipment, with more than 40% of frontline weapons Ukrainian-made. Export restrictions currently limit industrial scaling and international testing of systems against Russian forces. The controlled-export plan aims to allow sales to partner countries while ensuring national defense remains secure, preventing Russian access to technologies, and restricting sales to nations that have supported Ukraine against Russia.
