Troy Othneil Smith, a retired Marine Corps captain, was sentenced to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to cocaine possession with intent to distribute. His arrest followed an emergency landing of the small plane he was piloting, during which authorities discovered a kilogram of cocaine. Investigations revealed Smith had mailed over 2.6 pounds of cocaine previously. His flight instructor, Gabriel Breit, was initially arrested but later cleared of wrongdoing. Smith expressed regret for his actions, apologizing to his family.
I regret every single minute of that episode of my life, Smith told Montenegro. He also apologized to his family for breaking their trust.
Carter wrote in sentencing documents that Smith was learning to fly so he could pilot cross-country distribution trips.
