The journey began with trips to the Bahamas for marijuana, which dwindled in supply. Seeking a reliable source, a plane was purchased for drug trafficking to Colombia. The first successful trip in 1979 yielded vast profit, but a significant financial loss followed due to a mishap. Threatened by Colombian suppliers for an outstanding debt, the situation escalated to life-threatening threats. Faced with danger, the decision shifted from marijuana to cocaine, recognizing its higher profitability amid desperation to protect family.
I decided to go where the pot grows: Colombia. But to get to Colombia, I would need to buy an airplane and learn how to fly it.
My first trip to Colombia in 1979 was a huge success. I brought back a ton of marijuana and sold it and made a few hundred thousand dollars.
I owed those Colombian suppliers $800,000 for that weed. Two weeks later, they sent thugs to kidnap me. And those thugs put a gun to my head.
Up until that point, I had avoided anything to do with cocaine. But my life was on the line now, and so were the lives of my family.
