'My cancer was dismissed as a pulled muscle'
Briefly

Mel Tottoh, a former footballer, experienced debilitating rib and back pain, which he initially attributed to muscle strain from golf. Despite consulting his GP, who suggested it was a pulled muscle, his condition worsened. Blood tests eventually revealed he had myeloma. Shocked by the diagnosis, particularly given his family's cancer history, he underwent radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and a stem cell transplant, reaching remission by November 2022. Tottoh emphasizes the essential support from loved ones and the ongoing need for maintenance treatment.
When I was diagnosed, I had holey bones in my ribs, thighs, spine and skull.
It progressed over months to being quite debilitating. It got to a point where it started having a real impact on my life.
Being struck down with this was a complete shock. My dad had died of cancer and then, in the last 12 years, two of my brothers died of cancer.
It takes a small army to get you through this ordeal. The most important thing now is having people in your corner, people who care, people who lift you up when you're down.
