'I survived breast cancer but I lost three siblings to the disease'
"Everything was hunky dory [with the first mammogram], results were fine, so when the BreastCheck letter dropped in my letterbox in the February after my 50th, I didn't even think twice about not going."
Síle Nic Suibhne underwent her first mammogram in 2013, two years before turning 50, due to family history of breast cancer—her older sister Kathleen had previously been diagnosed. Following normal results from that initial screening, Síle received a BreastCheck letter in February after her 50th birthday and attended her second mammogram without hesitation. Working as a Special Needs Assistant in Sligo, Síle's experience with the national breast screening programme became significant when the 2015 mammogram revealed findings that changed her life, highlighting the importance of regular screening for those with familial risk factors.
