"Since 2012, Christine Burnett's nephew, Jay Gualitieri, 35, has been a resident at a Central West Specialized Developmental Services (CWSDS) group home in Oakville. But at the end of September, he and other CWSDS residents were moved from their group homes in Mississauga, Milton, Georgetown, and Burlington to the charity's headquarters at 53 Bond St. in Oakville, according to the support workers' union involved in the dispute."
"They've removed all of the residents from the safety and security and predictable routines of their group homes. Christine Burnett says there was no consent given before Central West Specialized Developmental Services residents were relocated. Now, she and other concerned family members have published an open letter to Premier Doug Ford, asking him to help their loved ones return to their previous group homes, to familiar surroundings and daily routines with staff who know how best to support them."
Family members report that adults with autism cared for by Central West Specialized Developmental Services were moved out of their group homes without family consent amid a labour dispute. One resident, 35-year-old Jay Gualitieri, had lived in a CWSDS Oakville group home since 2012 before being relocated to the charity's headquarters. Families published an open letter asking Premier Doug Ford to help return residents to familiar homes, routines, and staff. CWSDS said the relocations prepared for a possible lockout; OPSEU Local 249 said management requested a no board report, prompting a lockout countdown, and that workers have not taken a strike vote. Families say the number of relocated residents is unclear and express concern about loss of safety, security and predictable routines.
