Many families have shared that they are more comfortable with day trips, and this has been reflected in student participation," the letter reads."
"Offering experiential and outdoor opportunities is an incredible way to build teamwork, build confidence and just learn differently," she said."
Southwood Park Public School ended all overnight trips, cancelling Grade 8 graduation travel to Ottawa and Grade 6 and 7 trips to Claremont Nature Centre and Muskoka Woods. The school cited unintentional cultural or personal barriers, financial burdens on families, and additional staff responsibilities, noting higher comfort with day trips reflected in participation. Parents are upset about lack of consultation and are requesting evidence or a community survey supporting the decision. Parents emphasize the educational value of experiential outdoor trips for teamwork and confidence, and nearly 100 parents have formed a WhatsApp group to explore fundraising and other solutions.
