"operational constraints with our rail partner, CN."
"This doesn't have to be a zero-sum game, where in order to service Montreal and Toronto, you have to take something away from the communities in between,"
"I think it's important not to disrespect that market or take it for granted,"
"We remain confident that this ... service, requested by 70% of our passengers, represents an important step toward delivering more efficient passenger rail in Canada,"
Via Rail postponed a pilot project for direct downtown-to-downtown service between Montreal and Toronto that would have bypassed several eastern Ontario stops and cut 30–40 minutes from some trips. The postponement was attributed to operational constraints with rail partner CN, and Via plans to continue working with CN to seek solutions and potentially launch the service later. Kingston officials and local leaders opposed the plan because it would reduce daily stops and affect roughly one million residents along the corridor, calling the proposed cuts devastating and promising to raise concerns with federal officials.
