"MacMunn had pleaded guilty in June to impaired driving causing death. At the time of the multi-vehicle crash on April 18, 2023, MacMunn was driving 110 kilometres per hour on Albion Road near Finch Avenue W., where the speed limit was 50 kilometres per hour, the court heard on Friday. Her blood alcohol level was "extremely high" at the time, Corrick said, being recorded at more than 2.5 times the legal limit."
"In her decision, Ontario Superior Court Justice Katherine Corrick denied a request from MacMunn's lawyer for a three-year sentence and ruled that MacMunn will not be allowed to drive for eight years after she is released from prison. Corrick said MacMunn is otherwise a person of good character, but the court must send a message that impaired driving causing death will be punished with significant prison sentences."
"Hazela Baksh, 64, was driving home from Ramadan prayers when she was rear-ended by MacMunn, the court heard. Baksh was killed in the collision. Two other women were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to police. No sentence I impose on Ms. MacMunn can ever compensate Ms. Baksh's family for their terrible loss, Corrick told the court. Hazela Baksh was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on April 18, 2023."
Ontario Superior Court Justice Katherine Corrick sentenced Tara MacMunn to four years in prison after MacMunn pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death in a multi-vehicle crash on April 18, 2023. MacMunn was driving 110 km/h in a 50 km/h zone and had a blood alcohol level recorded at more than 2.5 times the legal limit. The crash killed 64-year-old Hazela Baksh and seriously injured two other women. Corrick denied a defence request for a three-year sentence and imposed an eight-year driving prohibition after release. MacMunn, a single mother of three with no prior criminal record, received character-based mitigation but the court emphasized deterrence.
