Seojin Kim's story illustrates the severe challenges individuals face when trying to obtain and enforce restraining orders. Despite persistent harassment from her ex-partner, culminating in hundreds of contacts over weeks, Kim sought legal protection through an Ontario Superior Court Justice. However, even after the court issued a protective order, enforcing it proved to be an uphill battle. Kim faced indifference from the Toronto police, who initially dismissed her concerns about enforcement. Her situation highlights not only the emotional toll of harassment but also systemic issues within law enforcement in supporting victims.
"...I was feeling unsafe and kind of scared about every time I had to go outside," Kim told CBC Toronto.
"It doesn't make sense, they have to protect me; it's their duty. That's why we got a restraining order," said Kim.
"When she first brought the protective order and extensive evidence of the breaches to Toronto police's 51 Division on April 12, she said no officer would even look at it..."
"When she blocked his numbers, she says he'd call from a different line, and when she blocked his email, he created alternate addresses."
