Thousands take part in walk through Toronto to raise over $3.6M for cancer research | CBC News
"I thought, okay, I'm going to go through the doors of Princess Margaret with all my heart. I remember that day so well. And I walked through the doors and a feeling of comfort overcame me. And I started thinking, you know what, I'm going to look at this place as my temple of healing. If you can't change the situation, change your mind. I've always believed that."
"leave fear on the table because I loved my life way too much to live in fear and I was going to try to live in the light."
"I want everyone to know, you know, you're not alone."
Thousands of people walked through downtown Toronto to raise more than $3.6 million for cancer research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the largest amount raised by a walk to support the centre in six years. Participants began a 21-kilometre route at the waterfront, passed through several downtown neighbourhoods and stopped at the centre. Jeanne Beker shared her breast cancer diagnosis after a mammogram following her 70th birthday, followed by an ultrasound, MRI and biopsy. Beker described feeling comfort upon entering the centre, called it a temple of healing, urged leaving fear behind and emphasized that people with cancer are not alone.
