""Over the first development of the program, we've had a lot of members that are avid cyclists," he said. "The next evolution of the program is to start to bring new people into the program and e-bikes do that.""

Toronto's bike share program is forecasting rapid growth, from 2.4 million rides in 2019 to 8.1 million in 2025 and targeting 14 million annual rides by 2030. The program plans to add 2,550 e-bikes and double docks for them, plus 2,600 regular bikes. The fleet currently includes about 2,400 e-bikes, which average six to seven trips per day compared to four to six for regular bikes. New e-bikes will be lighter and gearless. E-bikes help riders travel farther with less effort by flattening terrain and removing hills, making the service more appealing to hesitant or less experienced cyclists.
