Thorncliffe Park tenants, landlord reach 'amicable agreement' after years-long rent strike | CBC News
"A years-long protest by tenants at Thorncliffe Park has come to an end after "an amicable agreement" was reached with the private landlord, Starlight Investments. The agreement comes after tenants at 71, 75 and 79 Thorncliffe Park Dr. began protesting above-guideline rent increases, varying from 4.94 per cent to 5.5 per cent, in 2023. Over the course of their protest, residents also spoke out about the disrepair of their units since landlords Starlight Investments and Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments) took over in 2019."
"The rent strike went until November 2023 when the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) ordered tenants to pay their rent into a trust. In March 2025, at the request of the LTB, tenants began paying rent again directly to their landlords. The dispute comes to an end ahead of an expected decision by the LTB, which wrapped up hearings in June. At issue was the eviction proceedings against tenants who had been withholding rent. But before evictions could proceed, the LTB had to rule on whether the landlords were in breach of the Residential Tendencies Act."
An amicable agreement ended a years-long protest by tenants at 71, 75 and 79 Thorncliffe Park Dr. Tenants began protesting above-guideline rent increases ranging from 4.94 to 5.5 per cent in 2023 and raised concerns about building disrepair after Starlight Investments and PSP Investments took over in 2019. Starlight stated the terms are confidential and confirmed residents are no longer withholding rent, adding the company will continue to ensure properties remain safe and welcoming. The Landlord and Tenant Board ordered rent paid into a trust in November 2023 and requested direct payments resume in March 2025. Eviction proceedings were contingent on an LTB ruling on alleged breaches of the Residential Tendencies Act, with hearings concluding in June.
