"It's not every day where you have a case where someone is found 300 kilometres or so offshore out in the ocean. He received just over eight months in jail to hold him accountable for what clearly is a very serious offence."
"In court, Saleh said a man in Edmonton had befriended him and helped him with his car restoration business and after that he began to fear for his life. RCMP investigated Saleh's claims about organized crime, but found no evidence of that."
"Saleh was no sailor and he underestimated the challenges of the open Atlantic Ocean in September."
Mohammad Yazed Saleh, 31, drove from Alberta to Nova Scotia and stole a Cape Islander fishing boat called The Getaway from a yacht club in D'Escousse. He was discovered a week later drifting on the Atlantic Ocean east of Sable Island, headed toward dangerous waters. Saleh claimed he was fleeing organized crime and attempting to reach Morocco to seek asylum. He admitted to theft and possession of a stolen truck from Alberta. RCMP investigated his organized crime allegations but found no evidence. Crown prosecutor Keavin Gallant Finnerty noted the case's rarity in Canadian law. Saleh received an eight-month sentence, though he was released on time served due to custody credit since his September arrest. His lawyer noted Saleh was not an experienced sailor and underestimated Atlantic Ocean challenges.
