Sixties Scoop survivor created Indigenous Survivors Day for reflection ahead of Canada Day | CBC News
Briefly

Thunder Bay has proclaimed Indigenous Survivors Day, as initiated by Sixties Scoop survivor Troy Abromaitis, to honor Indigenous children taken from their families. This day encourages Canadians to reflect on the loss and separation experienced by Indigenous communities before celebrating Canada Day. Abromaitis hopes to inspire other communities to recognize this day, emphasizing the need to acknowledge various campaigns affecting Indigenous children, including the Sixties Scoop. This initiative aims to fill the gap in recognizing ongoing impacts, and indicate a movement towards healing and national recognition of these issues.
This is not just about history. It's about healing what is still happening with regards to Sixties Scoop survivors, Millennium Scoop survivors, birth alerts and the over representation of children in the child welfare system who carry invisible pain.
By placing Indigenous Survivors Day on June 30, we invite Canadians to reflect before they celebrate Canada Day, and to remember the children who are taken and why this matters.
