"It's a perfect opportunity,"
"These [homes] are a really good opportunity and I'm really sad and also surprised at [the fact that] they're standing here unoccupied."
Developer David Walsh, the FCJ Refugee Centre, and Geoff Kettel of the Leaside Residents Association propose converting 10 vacant houses on Glazebrook Avenue into transitional homes for low-income and refugee families. The houses were bought in 2023 by Gairloch Developments, which intends to demolish them for a planned 34-storey residential tower. The city denied a demolition permit because the developer has not secured a building permit, leaving the properties vacant for about a year. Walsh and Kettel have appealed to city councillors for support, but councillor Rachel Chernos Lin warns the plan may not be feasible and owner cooperation is uncertain.
