"Ryan Teschner, the inspector general of policing, announced on Monday an independent review of all 45 police forces in Ontario, following a corruption scandal involving seven Toronto officers and a retired constable. Investigators with York police arrested 27 people across the Greater Toronto Area last week for several charges, including attempted murder, breach of trust by a public officer and trafficking police uniforms."
""I understand that the public is watching. I understand that these issues need to be dealt with and addressed swiftly, but I'm also committed to doing so properly, " he said at a news conference Monday. Teschner, who previously served as the executive director and chief of staff of the Toronto police board, said he would appoint an external person to lead the work as a "safeguard."
"Mukherjee said the inspector general's broad focus puzzled him, as it didn't narrow in on the immediate issues being raised in Toronto's service. He said the review should start there, in order to provide residents with urgent answers. To put it in the context of a broader review, which will be time consuming, he said. I'm concerned this will result in losing the focus on what is happening in Toronto."
A corruption scandal involving seven Toronto officers and a retired constable prompted arrests and a provincewide inspection announcement. York police arrested 27 people across the Greater Toronto Area on charges including attempted murder, breach of trust by a public officer and trafficking police uniforms. The inspector general of policing announced an independent review of all 45 Ontario police forces and said an external lead will be appointed as a safeguard. A former Toronto Police Service Board chair expressed skepticism of a broad review and urged an immediate, focused investigation of Toronto to provide urgent answers.
