'Powerful' year for Toronto e-readers as public library logs record digital checkouts | CBC News
""We're thrilled that our TPL customers have reached this incredible milestone. It reflects something powerful: hundreds of thousands of readers discovering stories and accessing information anytime, anywhere, all for free with their library card," Abbott said."
""I personally used to read like one book a month. Now, I'm reading two to three and this has been consistent across all of our members," Darici said."
""With Libby also being free, people have access to all the books at their fingertips," she said."
Toronto Public Library recorded a record 14 million digital checkouts last year and expects to reach 100 million lifetime checkouts by April. Digital checkouts have risen steadily, with about a 35 percent increase from 2021 to 2025. OverDrive data show growth across e-books, audiobooks and magazines, with e-books leading. The Libby app serves as the primary access point on smartphones, tablets, computers and some e-readers. A Toronto book-club founder read 47 books last year, 42 via Libby, and members report increased reading. Librarians continue to play a key role in digital book lending.
